Application

Vacuum pumps for vacuum coating

In vacuum coating, thin films are produced on glass, tools, foils, wafers or plastic parts – by PVD (sputtering, evaporation), CVD, PECVD, ALD or in plasma treatment. The chamber is first evacuated and then held at process pressure so that vapour or process gas reaches the substrate and, according to Atlas Copco, uniform, adherent coatings are formed; Leybold names 10⁻² to 10⁻³ mbar for optical coatings and 10⁻² to 10⁻⁶ mbar for wear protection and decorative coatings. Below you can see how the application works, what vacuum the manufacturers name and which of their series are intended for it – 371 models from 5 manufacturers.

Operating principle

How it works: Vacuum coating (PVD, CVD)

The drawing shows the basic principle in section. The systems and pumps of the individual manufacturers differ in detail.

  1. EvacuationThe chamber is pumped down from atmospheric pressure to the process pressure – in batch systems the whole chamber; in inline systems the load locks cycle (according to Leybold from 1,000 to 1 mbar, 2–3 cycles per minute).
  2. CoatingPVD: the material is evaporated or sputtered and, according to Edwards, condenses on the substrate in high vacuum. CVD and ALD: process gases react at the substrate, according to Edwards from 10⁻³ mbar, ALD according to Pfeiffer Vacuum at 10⁻¹ to 5 mbar.
  3. VentingThe valve to the pump closes, and the chamber is vented and reloaded; inline systems instead transfer the substrate out through the exit load lock while the process chamber stays under vacuum.

Vacuum and sizing

Vacuum coating (PVD, CVD): how much vacuum is needed

What the manufacturers say about pressure, pumping speed and sizing.

Which vacuum

Leybold: optical coatings 10⁻² to 10⁻³ mbar, wear protection and decorative 10⁻² to 10⁻⁶ mbar, roll-to-roll 10⁻¹ to 10⁻³ mbar, glass coating in operation 10⁻² to 10⁻³ mbar. Edwards: CVD and ALD from 10⁻³ mbar, PVD as evaporation and condensation in high vacuum. Pfeiffer Vacuum: ALD 10⁻¹ to 5 mbar, MBE about 10⁻¹¹ hPa. Atlas Copco names high vacuum for uniform, adherent coatings.

Which pumping speed

For ALD systems, Pfeiffer Vacuum names 1,800 to 4,500 m³/h. The cycle time also determines the sizing: Leybold names 2–3 load lock cycles per minute in glass coating, very short pump-down cycles for displays and short cycle times in solar inline systems; Edwards names fast pump-down cycles for glass coating.

What determines the sizing

The process: for PVD, Edwards names backing pumps together with turbo pumps or cryopumps; CVD and ALD run at higher pressure, with corrosive or powdery by-products according to Pfeiffer Vacuum. For plasma processes, Leybold names PFPE and O2 versions (TRIVAC B BCS-PFPE, RUVAC PFPE, VARODRY HD O2, DURADRY, DRYVAC); for parylene coating, in which parylene is applied as a pore-free film by pyrolysis in a vacuum, Leybold names NOVADRY and SCREWLINE SP.

What the manufacturers point out

Busch: coating surfaces in a clean vacuum chamber. Leybold: purity in film formation with MBE and ALD; low-E coatings reflect solar energy with full transparency. Edwards: reproducible conditions for experimental coatings. Atlas Copco: encapsulation of solar cells against oxygen and moisture.

Frequently asked questions

Vacuum coating (PVD, CVD): frequently asked questions

How does vacuum coating work?

The chamber with the substrate is evacuated, then the coating is applied. In PVD, the material is evaporated or sputtered and, according to Edwards, condenses on the substrate in high vacuum; in CVD, a gas reacts at the substrate, according to Edwards from 10⁻³ mbar. According to Atlas Copco, the vacuum ensures uniform, adherent coatings; according to Busch, surfaces are coated in a clean vacuum chamber.

What is the difference between PVD and CVD?

PVD (physical vapour deposition) evaporates or sputters a solid material that is deposited on the substrate – according to Edwards, evaporation and condensation in high vacuum, according to Leybold at 10⁻² to 10⁻⁶ mbar. CVD (chemical vapour deposition) lets process gases react at the substrate, according to Edwards from 10⁻³ mbar; according to Pfeiffer Vacuum, ALD runs at 10⁻¹ to 5 mbar. For CVD and ALD, Pfeiffer Vacuum names corrosive or powdery by-products.

How much vacuum does a PVD coating need?

Leybold names 10⁻² to 10⁻⁶ mbar for wear protection and decorative coatings, 10⁻² to 10⁻³ mbar for optical multilayer coatings, 10⁻² to 10⁻³ mbar for operating glass coating systems and 10⁻¹ to 10⁻³ mbar for roll-to-roll coating. A single pump or a central vacuum system?

A central system in a room of its own keeps noise and heat away from production and matches its output to the demand. Central vacuum systems are planned and built by Eugen Theis Vakuum, a company of the Ehrler & Beck group – more under Central Vacuum.

Does Ehrler & Beck also supply spare parts and service?

Yes. Ehrler & Beck offers original spare parts and accessories as well as maintenance and repair.
