Application

Vacuum pumps for vacuum impregnation

In vacuum impregnation, the air is drawn out of the pores of a workpiece before the impregnating agent surrounds it; when the vessel is vented, the air pressure pushes the agent into the pores. Busch describes how the impregnating agent thus penetrates every pore, Elmo Rietschle how preservative penetrates deep into the wood. Below you can see how the application works, what vacuum the manufacturers name and which of their series are intended for it – 229 models from 4 manufacturers.

Operating principle

How it works: Vacuum impregnation

The drawing shows the basic principle in section. The systems and pumps of the individual manufacturers differ in detail.

  1. EvacuatingThe workpiece stands in the closed vessel; the vacuum pump draws the air out of the vessel and out of the pores of the material.
  2. FloodingThe impregnating agent is let in under vacuum and surrounds the workpiece – for wood, the preservative (Elmo Rietschle); for fish feed, the additives (Busch); for battery cells, the electrolyte.
  3. VentingThe vessel is vented; the air pressure pushes the agent into the evacuated pores. Busch: the impregnating agent penetrates every pore; Elmo Rietschle: preservative penetrates deep into the wood.

Vacuum and sizing

Vacuum impregnation: how much vacuum is needed

What the manufacturers say about pressure, pumping speed and sizing.

Which vacuum

What is described is the result: the agent penetrates every pore (Busch) or deep into the wood (Elmo Rietschle); in batteries, it ensures contact between electrode and electrolyte (Busch). We determine the required pressure with you on the basis of the material and the impregnating agent.

Which pumps

Busch names the DOLPHIN liquid ring vacuum pump (wood, fishmeal), the MINK claw vacuum pump (wood) as well as R5 RA and COBRA NC/NX (battery cells). Atlas Copco lists the ZRS Roots pumps, Edwards the EH Roots pumps, Leybold the SOGEVAC B. Elmo Rietschle lists impregnation without naming a series.

Vacuum impregnation: where the manufacturers name it

The manufacturers list these uses on their own pages.

Woodworking

Busch describes how the impregnating agent penetrates every pore of the wood under vacuum and names MINK and DOLPHIN; Elmo Rietschle writes that preservative penetrates deep into the wood.

Battery manufacturing

Busch names impregnation in the production of lithium batteries to ensure contact between electrode and electrolyte, with R5 RA and COBRA NC/NX.

Fish farming and aquaculture

Busch describes fishmeal impregnation: additives are drawn into the pores of the feed; DOLPHIN is named.

Chemicals

Elmo Rietschle lists impregnation for the chemical industry without describing it.

Frequently asked questions

Vacuum impregnation: frequently asked questions

How does vacuum impregnation work?

The workpiece stands in a vessel that is evacuated; in the process, the air escapes from the pores. Then the impregnating agent is let in, and when the vessel is vented, the air pressure pushes it into the evacuated pores. Busch describes the result as follows: the impregnating agent penetrates every pore.

Which vacuum pump for impregnating wood?

For impregnation in woodworking, Busch names MINK and DOLPHIN, and in its product finder the DOLPHIN. For woodworking, Elmo Rietschle describes how preservative penetrates deep into the wood, without naming a series.

How much vacuum does impregnation need?

The further the air is drawn out of the pores, the more space remains for the agent; the required pressure depends on the material and on the impregnating agent.

Why are battery cells impregnated?

Busch names impregnation in the production of lithium batteries: it ensures contact between electrode and electrolyte. For this, Busch provides R5 RA and COBRA NC/NX.

What is fishmeal impregnation under vacuum?

Busch describes it for fish farming: under vacuum, additives are drawn into the pores of the feed. Busch names the DOLPHIN liquid ring vacuum pump for this.

Oil-free or oil-lubricated for vacuum impregnation?

Both are named. Dry or without oil: Busch MINK (claw) and DOLPHIN (liquid ring), COBRA NC/NX (screw). Oil-lubricated: Busch R5 RA and Leybold SOGEVAC B. Atlas Copco ZRS and Edwards EH are Roots pumps that need a backing pump.

What are Roots pumps used for in impregnation?

Atlas Copco lists the ZRS and Edwards the EH for vacuum impregnation, both without a description. As a booster, a Roots pump increases the pumping speed of a pumping station – useful when large vessels are to be evacuated quickly.

What if impregnating agent gets into the pump?

A separator between the vessel and the pump retains vapours and droplets. For wood and fishmeal, Busch names the DOLPHIN liquid ring vacuum pump, whose operating liquid tolerates entrained vapours.

A single pump or a central vacuum system?

A central system in a room of its own keeps noise and heat away from production and matches its output to the demand. Central vacuum systems are planned and built by Eugen Theis Vakuum, a company of the Ehrler & Beck group – more under Central Vacuum.

Does Ehrler & Beck also supply spare parts and service?

Yes. Ehrler & Beck offers original spare parts and accessories as well as maintenance and repair.
