Application

Vacuum pumps for vacuum die casting

In vacuum die casting, the mould cavity of the die-casting mould is evacuated before the melt is injected. Busch describes the aim: removing gases from the mould, for aluminium and magnesium – so less air remains trapped in the casting. Below you can see how the application works, what vacuum the manufacturers name and which of their series are intended for it – 171 models from 3 manufacturers.

Operating principle

How it works: Vacuum die casting

The drawing shows the basic principle in section. The systems and pumps of the individual manufacturers differ in detail.

  1. ClosingThe die-casting mould closes, the vacuum valve opens the path from the mould cavity to the pump.
  2. EvacuatingThe pump evacuates the mould cavity – according to Busch, this removes the gases from the mould, for aluminium and magnesium.
  3. InjectingThe melt fills the evacuated mould, the valve closes, the part solidifies and is removed.

Vacuum and sizing

Vacuum die casting: how much vacuum is needed

What the manufacturers say about pressure, pumping speed and sizing.

Which vacuum

Busch describes the purpose – removing gases from the mould – and names the series. We determine the vacuum needed with you on the basis of the mould volume and the machine cycle.

What determines the design

The mould cavity must be evacuated in the short time between closing the mould and the shot, in the cycle of the machine.

Which pumps

Busch names R5, MINK, COBRA and PANDA/PUMA (in the product finder for vacuum die casting, R5 also for die casting), Pfeiffer Vacuum names HiLobe and the COMBI family, Leybold names SCREWLINE.

Frequently asked questions

Vacuum die casting: frequently asked questions

How does vacuum die casting work?

The die-casting mould closes, the mould cavity is evacuated via a valve, then the melt is injected and the valve closes. Busch describes the aim as removing the gases from the mould, for aluminium and magnesium.

Why vacuum in die casting?

Without vacuum, air remains in the mould cavity and is trapped by the melt. Busch names the removal of the gases from the mould as the purpose of vacuum die casting for aluminium and magnesium parts.

Which vacuum pump for die casting?

Busch names R5, MINK, COBRA and PANDA/PUMA – in its product finder for vacuum die casting, R5 also for die casting. Pfeiffer Vacuum names HiLobe and the COMBI family, Leybold lists vacuum casting for SCREWLINE.

How much vacuum does vacuum die casting need?

The vacuum needed and the pumping speed depend on the volume of the mould cavity and on the time between closing the mould and the shot; we determine the right pump with you on the basis of the mould volume and the machine cycle.

What is the difference between die casting and vacuum die casting?

In die casting the melt is forced into the mould under pressure; in vacuum die casting the mould cavity is evacuated beforehand. Busch distinguishes the two in its product finder – R5 models for die casting, products from R5, MINK, COBRA and PANDA/PUMA for vacuum die casting – and describes the purpose of the vacuum as removing the gases from the mould.

Which vacuum pump for aluminium and magnesium die casting?

Busch explicitly names aluminium and magnesium for vacuum die casting – removing gases from the mould – and lists R5, MINK, COBRA and PANDA/PUMA for it.

Which vacuum pump does Pfeiffer Vacuum name for die casting?

In its product finder Pfeiffer Vacuum lists HiLobe and the COMBI family for vacuum die casting, without describing the process in more detail.

Does Leybold name a vacuum pump for vacuum casting?

Yes, Leybold lists vacuum casting as an application for SCREWLINE, without describing it. The German product page calls the application “Vakuumformung” (vacuum forming), the English one “Vacuum casting”.

A single pump or a central vacuum system?

A central system in a room of its own keeps noise and heat away from production and matches its output to the demand. Central vacuum systems are planned and built by Eugen Theis Vakuum, a company of the Ehrler & Beck group – more under Central Vacuum.

Does Ehrler & Beck also supply spare parts and service?

Yes. Ehrler & Beck offers original spare parts and accessories as well as maintenance and repair.
