The Edwards RV3 is a two-stage, oil-sealed rotary vane vacuum pump with a pumping speed of 3.3 m³/h at 50 Hz and an ultimate pressure of 2 × 10⁻³ mbar. Ehrler & Beck supplies the RV3 in six variants with accessories, spare parts and service.
The Edwards RV3 is the smallest model of the RV series and, with a pumping speed of 3.3 m³/h at 50 Hz (3.9 m³/h at 60 Hz), the typical backing pump for small turbomolecular pumps, mass spectrometers, leak detectors and electron microscopes. Despite its compact design of 430 × 158 × 225 mm it offers the same ultimate pressure of 2 × 10⁻³ mbar as its larger sister models and the same mode switch for high vacuum or high throughput operation.
The RV series
The RV series is Edwards' standard series of small oil-sealed rotary vane pumps; more than 400,000 pumps have been built to date. A mode switch sets the pump either to high vacuum mode (best ultimate pressure) or to high throughput mode for continuous inlet pressures up to 500 mbar. The two-stage gas ballast (60 g/h or 220 g/h, on the RV12 290 g/h of water vapour) can be extended with an oil return kit and an oil mist filter to form a closed circuit without oil loss. An oil-controlled inlet valve opens smoothly and closes within 0.4 seconds after switch-off, so that no oil flows back into the system. Single-phase pumps have a wide-range motor with external voltage selector and integrated IEC socket, three-phase pumps are hard-wired; both motor variants meet efficiency class IE2. An O-ring-sealed sight glass, a large oil filler and maintenance with a single hexagon key keep the service effort low.

For the RV series Edwards names: mass spectrometry (GC-MS, LC-MS, ICP-MS, MALDI-TOF, RGA), leak detectors, electron microscopy (TEM, SEM, sputter coaters), high-energy physics (beamlines, accelerators, mobile pumping stations, backing pump for turbomolecular pumps), industry (glove boxes, coating systems, freeze drying, filling and emptying gas cylinders, refrigeration plant construction, degassing and curing), chemical sample preparation (gel dryers, rotary evaporators, concentrators, distillation, extraction, filtration) and research and development.
Variants of the Edwards RV3
The RV3 is available from Ehrler & Beck in six variants (part numbers A65201903, A65201904, A65201905, A65201906, A65201907, A65201925): four single-phase versions with a switchable wide-range motor (115/230 V or 100/200 V, factory-set to the voltage stated) and two three-phase versions for 200-230 V or 380-460 V, each 50/60 Hz. Single-phase pumps are connected via an IEC socket (mains cable as an accessory), three-phase pumps are hard-wired.
