Application

Vacuum pumps for soil remediation

In soil remediation by soil vapour extraction, a vacuum pump draws the air out of the ground through wells; volatile contaminants pass into the gas phase with the soil air and thus leave the subsoil. Elmo Rietschle names soil gas extraction for the remediation of contaminated soils, Leybold and Becker list soil remediation among their environmental applications. Below you can see how the application works, what vacuum the manufacturers name and which of their series are intended for it – 9 models from 1 manufacturers.

In short

Soil remediation (soil vapour extraction): the key facts

  • Extracting soil airElmo Rietschle names soil gas extraction for the remediation of contaminated soils. In this process the vacuum pump draws off the soil air with the volatile contaminants through wells.
  • Dry pumpsFor soil remediation Leybold lists the dry claw vacuum pumps CLAWVAC and the screw vacuum pumps NOVADRY; both work without oil in the pump chamber.
  • Air spargingBecker names soil remediation as air sparging, together with the aeration of sewage treatment plants and aquacultures, among its environmental applications, without describing it in more detail. In air sparging, air is blown in below the groundwater table and drawn off again, together with the contaminants, through the soil vapour extraction.
  • SelectionWe determine the right pump size with you on the basis of the soil type, the number and depth of the wells and the vacuum that is to be reached in the soil.

Operating principle

How it works: Soil remediation (soil vapour extraction)

The drawing shows the basic principle in section. The systems and pumps of the individual manufacturers differ in detail.

  1. ExtractingThe vacuum pump applies vacuum to the wells; the soil air flows in with the volatile contaminants. Elmo Rietschle calls the process soil gas extraction.
  2. SeparatingWater and condensate are removed in the separator, the filter retains particles; only then does the air reach the pump.
  3. DischargingThe pump passes the soil air through the outlet to the exhaust air treatment; the extraction continues until the contamination of the soil has been reduced.

Vacuum and sizing

Soil remediation (soil vapour extraction): how much vacuum is needed

What the manufacturers say about pressure, pumping speed and sizing.

Which vacuum

Which pump fits depends on the soil type, the number of wells and the vacuum that is to be reached in the soil.

Which pumps

Leybold lists the claw vacuum pumps CLAWVAC and the screw vacuum pumps NOVADRY, both dry. Elmo Rietschle names soil gas extraction for environmental technology, Becker names soil remediation as air sparging, both without a series.

Frequently asked questions

Soil remediation (soil vapour extraction): frequently asked questions

How does soil remediation with vacuum work?

A vacuum pump draws the soil air out through wells or lances in the ground. Volatile contaminants pass into the gas phase with the soil air and are thus removed from the subsoil; water is removed in the separator, the exhaust air is treated. Elmo Rietschle calls the process soil gas extraction for the remediation of contaminated soils.

Which vacuum pump for soil vapour extraction?

Leybold lists the dry claw vacuum pumps CLAWVAC and the screw vacuum pumps NOVADRY for soil remediation. Elmo Rietschle and Becker name the application without naming a specific series.

How much vacuum does soil remediation need?

The vacuum in the soil and the pumping speed depend on the soil type, the number and depth of the wells and the extent of the contamination.

Oil-free or oil-lubricated for soil remediation?

Leybold names the dry pumps CLAWVAC (claw) and NOVADRY (screw), both without oil in the pump chamber.

What is soil gas extraction?

Soil gas extraction is the term Elmo Rietschle uses for soil remediation: the gas in the soil is extracted in order to remediate contaminated soils. Elmo Rietschle lists the application under environmental technology.

What is air sparging?

In air sparging, air is blown into the ground below the groundwater table; the volatile contaminants pass into the air and are drawn off with the soil vapour extraction. Becker names soil remediation with the addition “air sparging” among its environmental applications, without describing it in more detail.

Why does water have to be separated upstream of the vacuum pump?

Soil air is moist and carries water with it. A separator removes water and condensate, a filter retains particles; this way only gas reaches the pump.

Can soil air be extracted with a claw vacuum pump?

Yes, Leybold explicitly lists the claw vacuum pump CLAWVAC for soil remediation, and also the screw vacuum pump NOVADRY.

A single pump or a central vacuum system?

A central system in a room of its own keeps noise and heat away from production and matches its output to the demand. Central vacuum systems are planned and built by Eugen Theis Vakuum, a company of the Ehrler & Beck group – more under Central Vacuum.

Does Ehrler & Beck also supply spare parts and service?

Yes. Ehrler & Beck offers original spare parts and accessories as well as maintenance and repair.
