Operating principle
How a rotary lobe blower works
Rotary lobe blowers work on the Roots principle: two rotary lobes are mounted in parallel in the housing and turn in opposite directions without touching each other or the housing. Between lobe and housing wall they trap the air and carry it from the inlet to the outlet; compression only takes place there, against the higher pressure of the discharge side. The drawing shows three-bladed lobes as Busch uses them in the TYR series; two-bladed lobes work on the same principle.
The drawing shows the basic principle. The designs of the individual manufacturers differ in detail.
- SuctionThrough the inlet (A) the air flows into the cell (D) that two blades of a rotary lobe (C) form with the housing (B).
- TransportThe following blade cuts the cell off from the inlet. The air is carried along the housing wall to the outlet without compression.
- DischargeAt the outlet (F), air flows from the discharge side into the cell and compresses its contents; the lobes then push the air out. The gap (E) separates the discharge side from the suction side.

Differential pressure instead of ultimate pressure
A rotary lobe blower is not selected by an ultimate pressure but by flow rate and differential pressure. The manufacturers therefore state the maximum differential pressure – as a vacuum for the vacuum version, as an overpressure for the pressure version. It is given in the technical data of the models.
What characterises the technology
Vacuum or overpressure
Rotary lobe blowers are available as a vacuum version and as a pressure version. For the TYR series, Busch states that a conversion is possible at any time.
Dry conveying chamber
The rotary lobes run without contact; no operating fluid is needed in the conveying chamber. Only the gearbox, which is separated from the conveying chamber, needs oil.
Drive and control
In the TYR series, an electric motor drives the blower stage via V-belts; the belt tension is maintained automatically. The PLUS versions control pressure and speed with a frequency converter.
Silencers
Inlet and outlet silencers are integrated in the TYR series. An acoustic enclosure is available as an option.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about rotary lobe blowers
How does a rotary lobe blower work?
Two rotary lobes turn in opposite directions and without contact in the housing. They trap the air between lobe and housing wall and carry it from the inlet to the outlet; compression only takes place there, against the higher pressure of the discharge side. The drawing in the section Operating principle shows every step.
What is the difference between rotary lobe blowers and Roots vacuum pumps?
Both work on the Roots principle. Roots vacuum pumps are built for low pressures and usually work together with a backing pump. Rotary lobe blowers work against atmosphere without a backing pump – as vacuum generators or as overpressure generators.
What distinguishes the vacuum version from the pressure version?
The vacuum version draws from the process and generates a vacuum; the pressure version delivers air at overpressure. In the TYR series from Busch, the vacuum versions carry the code CV and the pressure versions the code CP.
From which manufacturers does Ehrler & Beck carry this technology?
Currently from Busch. The series are listed in the section Manufacturers and series.
How do I find the right model?
In the product overview, the filters narrow down the selection by the key figures of the models. For sizing, it is best to tell us the gas to be conveyed, the working pressure and the flow rate you need – we will be glad to advise you.
What do the figures for 50 Hz and 60 Hz mean?
Flow rate and rated motor power depend on the mains frequency. The overview therefore shows both values wherever the manufacturer states them, and the size filters can be switched between 50 Hz and 60 Hz.
Does Ehrler & Beck also supply spare parts and service?
Yes. Ehrler & Beck offers original spare parts and accessories as well as maintenance and repair.
Which model fits your process?
Tell us the gas to be conveyed, the working pressure and the flow rate you need – we will advise you on selection, spare parts and service.
