Operating principle
How a radial blower works
The impeller turns at high speed. The air enters axially at the centre, is deflected into the radial direction in the blade channels and accelerated outwards by centrifugal force. In the volute casing the flow is slowed down; in the process, part of the velocity energy is converted into pressure.
The drawing shows the basic principle. The designs of the individual manufacturers differ in detail.
- EntryThe air flows through the inlet opening (A) into the centre of the impeller (B).
- AccelerationIn the blade channels (C) it is accelerated outwards and leaves the impeller at its edge.
- Pressure build-upIn the volute casing (D) the air is slowed down; part of its velocity energy becomes pressure before it flows through the outlet opening (E).

Pressure difference instead of ultimate pressure
Radial blowers are built for large air volumes at low pressure differences. The manufacturers therefore state the pressure difference that can be reached in suction operation and in pressure operation; it is given in the technical data of the models.
What characterises the technology
Large air volumes
Radial blowers are suitable for processes that need high volume flows at a low pressure difference.
Vacuum or pressure
The blowers work as vacuum generators or as compressors.
Speed control
A frequency converter adapts the air volume to the demand.
Contact-free running
The impeller turns without contact; as a result the blowers work with little wear and little maintenance.
Advantages
What speaks for this technology

Frequently asked questions
Questions about radial blowers
How does a radial blower work?
A fast-turning impeller draws in the air at its centre and accelerates it outwards by centrifugal force. In the volute casing the air is slowed down; in the process, velocity becomes pressure. The drawing in the section Operating principle shows every step.
What are radial blowers suitable for?
For processes that need large air volumes at low pressure differences – in suction operation as well as in pressure operation.
What is the difference between radial blowers and side channel blowers?
Both compress without contact. In the side channel blower the gas passes through the impeller many times and so reaches higher pressure differences. The radial blower accelerates the air outwards once and conveys large volumes at a low pressure difference.
From which manufacturers does Ehrler & Beck carry this technology?
Currently from Becker and Elmo Rietschle. The series are listed in the section Manufacturers and series.
How do I find the right model?
In the product overview, the filters narrow down the selection by the key figures of the models. For sizing, it is best to tell us the gas to be conveyed, the working pressure and the flow rate you need – we will be glad to advise you.
What do the figures for 50 Hz and 60 Hz mean?
Flow rate and rated motor power depend on the mains frequency. The overview therefore shows both values wherever the manufacturer states them, and the size filters can be switched between 50 Hz and 60 Hz.
Does Ehrler & Beck also supply spare parts and service?
Yes. Ehrler & Beck offers original spare parts and accessories as well as maintenance and repair.
Which model fits your process?
Tell us the gas to be conveyed, the working pressure and the flow rate you need – we will advise you on selection, spare parts and service.
