Vacuum distillation is an important process in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries and has applications in many other industries including the beverage and food industries. Another example is crude oil production: Crude oil contains heavier and lighter hydrocarbons with different boiling points that require two distillation operations. After the atmospheric distillation, a second vacuum distillation process is performed to separate heavy hydrocarbons at lower temperatures, thus minimizing thermal cracking and the formation of unwanted by-products.
